Woven Coasters

Woven Coasters

Weaving needn’t be something that takes hours of hard work, and we’ve got a nifty project that you can whip up in no time. These Moroccan-inspired coasters using just three colours can be made almost as quickly as the cups of tea you’ll be sitting on them (well… not quite but you get where we’re going here!).

For this project, you will need:
Yarn (and any other materials you want to weave in!)
- Warp thread
- Tapestry needle
- Weaving comb
- A good pair of scissors
- Cardboard
- Tea and biscuits (optional!)

1) Begin by warping your loom. We recommend warping the entire length so you can fit several coasters onto the same loom. If, like us, you have opted to create some circular coasters, carefully draw around a circular object onto a piece of cardboard, and cut this out to use as a template.

2) Weave the cardboard shape onto your loom, and then stitch around the shape. Once you have woven the outline of the circle, remove the cardboard and fill in the centre. We’ve combined wool tops and yarn for our coasters, but you can weave anything from denim to cotton!

3) You can make your coasters as simple or as complex as you like with the stitches, materials and colours you choose. We chose to stitch two oblong coasters, and two rectangular. You can also embellish with tassels and beads for further detailing and technique.
