As the calendar turns and we step into a brand new year, I always find myself craving a bit of freshness - new colours, new ideas, and new creative projects to get lost in. If you’re feeling that same spark, 2026 is the perfect moment to pick up a new craft (or return to one you’ve loved before). There’s something wonderfully grounding about making things with your hands, and January has a lovely way of giving us permission to slow down, reset, and start something just for ourselves.
Over the last 13 years of designing and making our craft kits here at Hawthorn Handmade, I’ve seen time and time again how transformative a small creative project can be. Whether you’re completely new to crafting or you’ve got half-finished projects tucked away in baskets and drawers, the new year is a beautiful time to dive back in.
Why the New Year Is the Perfect Time to Start a New Craft
A gentle fresh start
I’m not a big believer in strict resolutions, but I am a believer in doing more of what brings us joy. Crafting offers a calm, pressure-free way to ease into the year with something positive.
A boost for your wellbeing
Picking up a needle, following simple stitches, or just taking half an hour away from screens can work wonders for your mental wellbeing. Lots of our customers describe crafting as “a little pocket of peace” in their week - and I feel exactly the same.
A creative adventure that grows with you
There’s no finishing line to rush toward. Just enjoy each step - that moment when a design starts taking shape, the lovely textures and colours, and the satisfaction of saying “I made this!”
Three Inspiring Craft Kits to Try in 2026
If you’re looking for a new craft to start the year with, here are three of my favourites — each one beginner-friendly, full of colour, and perfect for any season.
Puffin Contemporary Embroidery Kit
One of our most-loved designs, the Puffin kit is bright, modern and ideal if you want a relaxing embroidery project that still feels achievable. You’ll learn simple stitches, work with gorgeous threads, and end up with a piece of wall art you’ll be proud of.

Hare Felt Craft Brooch Kit
If you prefer something smaller and quicker, our felt brooch kits are such a joyful make. The Hare design is full of character, and you can finish it in an evening or two. It’s a brilliant “first step” into hand stitching, and the finished brooch makes a lovely gift.

Baby Sea Turtle Needle Felting Kit
If you’re looking for a project that’s both adorable and wonderfully calming to make, our Baby Sea Turtle needle felting kit is a perfect choice. Needle felting is incredibly therapeutic - there’s something magical about watching soft wool transform into a sweet little creature right in your hands. This kit is beginner-friendly, easy to pick up, and so satisfying to finish.

Tips for Starting (and Sticking With) a New Craft
Over the years I’ve shared these little tips with thousands of makers, and they really do help:
Start small
Pick a project you can finish in a few sessions. There’s nothing like that first “I did it!” moment.
Make it part of your routine
Even 20–30 minutes a week can be wonderfully calming. A cup of tea, a cosy blanket, a hoop or a needle = bliss.
Let go of perfection
Crafting is meant to be fun. Wobbly stitches, thread that goes its own way… it’s all part of the process. And often, part of the charm.
Celebrate your progress
Display your finished piece, pop your brooch on your coat, or gift it to someone who’ll appreciate something handmade. It’s a lovely confidence boost.
Here’s to a Creative 2026
If the last year has felt busy, messy, or a bit overwhelming (and honestly, whose hasn’t?), starting a new craft can bring a moment of calm and a sense of renewal. It’s a chance to try something fresh, reconnect with yourself, and fill your downtime with colour and creativity.
Whether you choose embroidery, felt craft, or something entirely new this year, I hope 2026 brings you many joyful, creative moments - and I’d love to be part of your journey.
